I've managed to do all these things in some measure for two of our other daughter's weddings already plus two nieces & a nephew.
So what's the problem?? Not "much"....just the problem of finding something for ME to wear!
Do you know how hideously ugly "mother of the bride" dresses are? (I could go to the goodwill and find some old draperies & wrap around myself & look like that) Why would I want to wear something that is so totally "not-me"? Why would I want to buy something that I would never wear again? Why is it so hard? I just want something I like, That looks good on me, I can enjoy wearing, feel good about myself in, wear again, and doesn't cost me a fortune either!
hmmm......
Is that really too much to ask?
I've just spent (way to long) on-line, searching sites for ideas...Maybe I don't know how or where to look, but came up with zilch, nada, NOTHING that I liked.
Any suggestions anyone?? Feel free to send me links! I won't offer any prizes, but believe me, If I found something from your suggestions, You would have my un-dieing gratitude!!! post them here, or you can find my e-mail on my profile.
Here's the wedding colors, and the wedding is the end of Aug, so I have to plan on higher temperatures. I dislike long sleeves, The blue or green is out, I don't wear suits...I googled "mother of bride" dresses, and went to nearly every page. I also checked out "dressy" which is more along my line of thought. Long or tea length is fine...
Another one of my problems is that I don't want to look like I'm wearing something for a 60yr old,...but not 20 yr old either. Not picky....NOT ME!!
Colors please? Name a few where you have looked if you would
ReplyDeleteI hear you! My sis has just announced that she's getting married in two months.... and she wants me to speak at the wedding...so I have to find something that matches and looks vaguely "workerish"...ugh! I've searched online and spent 3 hours at the mall today.... happy searching!
ReplyDeleteMaxine, have you tried JCPenney? They sometimes have nice dresses for nice occasions. Haven't looked in a while though, so not sure about their latest styles. Good luck. At least the bride is ready-ha!:) Oh, and congratulations to Jeanne and Floyd!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any answers for you. I do agree that I want to look my age also and not look like I am embracing my second childhood. Or racing for the casket. Does it mean you and I are at that awkward stage. The 'tween stage. That is why there are no tasteful in between clothes. I thought we went though that years ago.
ReplyDeleteI did find my dress for Autumns wedding at JC Penny
ReplyDeleteTry Coldwater Creek - either on-line or by catalog if you have time. They are great for our age-group. Nice - dressy, but not over the top.
ReplyDeleteA 2nd vote for Coldwater Creek. Fabulous clothes - flattering on many figure types as well!
ReplyDeleteGood luck mom. Glad I found my dress in one day of shopping thanks to all Lynisha's hard work ahead of time.
ReplyDeleteoh ok! Thanks for stopping by :) Ya I know matt and amanda
ReplyDeleteYou may remember that I just went through this for my son's wedding. What a nightmare trying to find a dress that didn't show boobs, thighs and "aging" body! For warm weather I'd suggest wearing a thin guazey wrap over a sleeveless dress, since that is what all of the dresses are anyway. You can even make a capelet type wrap that just "makes" the outfit. Now listen, don't go around bad mouthing 60 year olds! That number looms closer and closer!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Remember...I'm only "39".....
ReplyDeleteNothing against 60 yr olds...except MY MOTHER is still in her 60's! And, granted, she looks very nice, just not what I want to wear yet! :*)
AND, you're all doing a great job on the suggestions! Thank you so much.
I may never leave my house to shop again!!
I'm thinking the draperies is a good idea. We could all wear Toga's. In fact, here's a site that tells you how to put it on! :)

Wow! Shopping used to be fun, when I was the perfect size and clothes were somewhat modest. Now, ughhhh....

ReplyDeletetagged you, check my blog for directions
Jim; Yes, that definitely looks like the easiest way to go! Works for any size, any shape, any age!! LOL!
ReplyDeletei was a bride's maid a year or so ago and what they ended up deciding was 2-3 pieces...a nice blouse and a longish skirt..( ivory and black in my case) if dresses are getting you down look for some classy 2 pieces...just my 2cents!
ReplyDeleteOk... here's a few links to look at:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.beautifullymodest.com/
Or top one on this page. It looks like this and comes in multiple colors.
If I thought it was the right pink, I'd say this dress, but I don't think it is. Bummer. Because this is an awesome dress you could wear over and over again. Maybe there's another color in the list that would work.
Looks like we're not the only ones in the market for modest wedding dresses. ;)
Ok... check out the available colors on that last (pink) dress I linked to. There are LOTS of options on that one. The cost of the dress is a bit steep, but if it's something you could wear many times over in the future, it might be worth it.
ReplyDeleteLani; I did see all the colors, and I really really like that dress too!
ReplyDeleteHow are you doing links in the comment area??
It's HTML code. I can't explain it in the comments without the comments making it a link, so I'll send instructions to you if you e-mail me at craignlani at juno dot com. It's pretty simple to do.
