From *house* to Home 8/2012~

**  NEW UPDATE--FEBRUARY 2014.  We're in the process of re-doing the bathroom!  I will be up-dating this page soon.  I have updated pictures of the upstairs bedrooms and the laundry room/sewing/craft room to add also!!  Stay tuned for more soon :)

I can just imagine the tired heavy sigh your new home has been giving for so many years.... and then as your family comes in and starts exfoliating the layers of 'wrinkles'....it begins to grin just a bit, yet still cautious and afraid to be too hopeful, for fear of disappointment. Room by room as each 'worry' fades away as its peeling wallpaper and curling linoleum is removed, it's grin will just get wider and wider and soon it will give off that belly laugh of pure happiness and childlike excitement once again!"

(August 2012) No, we haven't moved yet.  We do have a house to live in tho as soon as it is "livable". 

Here's where we'll be calling home as we start a new chapter in our book.  At the present time this is the only photo I have of the outside.

We have a lot of inside work to do, and I've taken pictures from the beginning of "how it was".   I'll get those up soon.  We've already made a huge progress mess, and I'll try to keep updating to show what we're doing.

(Sept 21 post) "Before" pictures of the inside, taken when we first saw the house.

We've moved many times, lived in a lot of different houses but for the first time in our married life I did not get to see the house, or choose whether or not we were going to live here.  I thought it was nerve wracking to say the least!

My kids who live nearby went over & saw it with Leon and Lynisha took pictures for me.  I have to say that my thoughts at initial view via photos was  pretty dim!

Time and a mind set to make things work do have a way of changing things tho.

 From the garage on the left at the bottom of the stairs, coming up to the kitchen and on the right going down to the basement.

The back Entry-
The back entry way is painted (repainted yellow) and decorated

 It was the perfect place to put my garden gate, a keepsake from our tea room days.  The sunflower decor is partly keepsakes from Jana who had a small collection of them before she left home.

The Kitchen:

 

 Looking into the kitchen from the dining room-
 These are the only cabinets in the kitchen.  We will be re-doing the walls, floor and adding some cabinets .

Kitchen:

 We took the lower paneling off the walls, scraped it, textured the walls, used Kilz, then painted.
The old linoleum was pulled up, sub floor laid and new flooring put down. The girls helped me on the walls, Leon did the priming and painting and Morgen did most of the new floor.

Stove (we found a good used one for very little money) Cabinets added--The large, long one is one that my dad made for me when I had the tea room.  We used it later in our basement family room, and although I had no room for it in the farm house, it's been in storage as I didn't want to part with it.  We plan to put some type of doors on the front of it. The additional cabinets we added in here are also ones we salvaged and had stored.  Later I will paint them all so hopefully it will give a much more "matching" look to the kitchen.  Sometimes being a collector/saver is a good thing--especially when you're short on $$ and moving into a house that is lacking adequate nessessities like cabinets/counter space!!

Here's what it looked like by the end of my last work days there.  I'm anxious to see it now after a few more things have been added from the moving truck!

I'm not done but want to get some new pictures up.  I have curtains to figure out yet and I want to paint the brown cupboards white.

I want to put some kind of doors on the front of my cabinet.  Possibly using old windows or screens. Haven't had time to get that one figured out yet.
I needed additional storage cabinets and was going to just use open shelves, but in sorting out all my "STUFF" I came across these open corner units that were the perfect height to set one of my storage units on that I'd used in other places--scrapbook store, laundry room & craft room later.

So in trying to get my house "put together" while I was experimenting with some different things & setting some of my "STUFF" around trying to get a visual, I set some shutters that I had tried somewhere else, in front of my open kitchen cabinet.  Bingo!  They were not wide enough, but I figured my handyman could fix that problem!  So with an addition of a piece of wood on the outsides of each set, a couple cans of spray paint and magnetic closures, again I am thankful for my husbands ability to "fix" almost anything, and even thankful for my STASH of STUFF that I couldn't bring myself to get rid of when we moved!

 Looking in to the kitchen from the dining room.  I was thinking if I painted all the cabinets white it would unify a bit since I'm improvising.  Sorry, the color on these photos is really bad.  The walls are a lovely "Longaberger" green! Smile!

Hmmm, looks like I'm not lacking for STUFF!! ;)

 Dining Room:

(Additional edit 9/28/12)

 

 Leon took up the old linoleum in the dining room, the carpet off the floor in the living room and sanded the wood floors. They aren't finished here yet, these were taken during the process.

 We took off layers of wallpaper.  Underneath several of them this very old layer was found, some of it still intact. If you look closely it's a murel scene that originally went accross the whole wall.

 Please pardon the paint swatches on the wall--I couldn't decide what I wanted to do and needed a visual.  Now that we're moved in and my furniture is in place I think I have it figured out.  I really need some red in here! :)


The old wallpaper picture is still a work in process.  I've found a window to put over the top of it but it needs some paint first and then I need to adjust the size of the picture

 Still need to figure out something for window coverings too.  Living in the country & no one around makes that not a priority for me.  However as it gets colder I'm going to want something there!

I nearly forgot to add these!  I got the lower part of my dining room painted!  Red! 

 Another idea I saw--I took a shutter apart, laid them end to end and it gives me a perfect size "table runner" for my harvest table. We took the open/closure rod off, plus the hinges.   I'm going to paint it when I get around to it--maybe black, maybe green--haven't decided.  Anyway not only does it work for a centerpiece, but it works to set the hot dishes on so I don't have to worry about hotpads under!

The red is the same as I have used in my other houses.  I had a different sample picked out, then when I went to buy the paint I didn't have it with me, so I thought phooy--I really liked this color anyway, so just went with it.  I used the same color on the inside of the bookcase in the livingroom.

EDIT 11/21/2012:
I was waiting until I had my new couch to post updates of the living room.  We got the walls finished painting and painted some trim (out of our "STASH" black and got it up. I had started out with the piano against the wall that the bookcase is on, and bookcase on the dark wall but once I got the couch in there it just felt too tight. Switched things around and I can breath much easier, besides it looks better.
I have several things that are not complete in this room yet.  My projects seem to be a work in progress, I have to put a visual up and look at it for a while & try different things.  However if I don't post these pictures of what it's like so far, it may be a while, as I'm taking a break to enjoy a new baby that should be coming any time, plus some grandkid time & maybe a road trip too. 

 I'm very happy with my new couch. rather ironically the color changes with the light in here, and although I promised my kids I would not put green in this living room, the couch looks pretty green color .  It's really a gold/brown color (or it was in the store!!)
Now I'm more anxious than ever to replace the two rocking chairs in here!
My husband surprised me with the old screen door today before he went to work--I wanted it for a visual room divider by the front door, but didn't think he was going to have time to get it ready since he's been busy working on my kitchen cabinet doors!  

I saw this idea on pintrest that I liked and thought would "fit" my living room.........

More views--

 Again...not complete, just some figuring out to do yet.

 This "bookcase" came out of my grandpa's garage some years ago.  He used it for storage of tools & misc.  I've used it in my kitchen for my pantry, my school room for our books, my bedroom for a bookcase, my farm porch for decoration & cookbooks, and now it's in my livingroom for a bookcase.
I don't remember what color the inside was when we pulled it out of the garage, but I painted it blue, then cream and now red.  In case you haven't noticed, I have very little "new" in my house!

This area takes alot of usable space out of my living room. The jog is created by the stairs on the other side of the living room wall. This area has to be "walk thru" to get to the hall/bathroom/bedroom.
This is all for now--I'm off to get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving weekend!!

 The bedroom on the main floor, and it contains the *only* closet in the entire house :p  Yes, the little nook under the stairs!

  This covers the main floor.  I'll come back and add the "progress" and (hopefully) "new improved" look pictures later.  Also the up-stairs and basement.
