"The walrus said..."
Now really, I have no idea where that saying came from, except that I remember my grandma Ruth saying it!
Anyway, it popped into my head when I was starting this post, so that's what I wrote!
3 years ago, the first of July our Daughter Laura went to Finland to live and work.
Without today's technology of cell phones, skype, internet--e-mail, blogging and facebook, I can hardly imagine how difficult it would be to have any of my children go so far away. When I was a kid, "over-seas" was very very far away, and rather un-amaginable.
Today's technology and the ease/frequency of travel makes it a whole different scenario. While it was still difficult to see her leave, I know it was no where near close to years ago when travel & communication was a very long and difficult process.
This was a couple months before I started blogging, so I'll post the pictures from then.
Our family--at the airport to see her "off"...
Some of her co-workers who came
Goodbye's are a bit hard at best, and there's alot of distance & time with this one!
At least there was a smile for the last view before the gate!
*******
Last summer our 14 year old daughter went to visit her for 3 months, traveling by herself. (See here) I don't think I ever would have been able to send her alone without the technology! She flew from Denver to Newark, NJ, and I saw her on the plane in Denver. Laura was in communication with me via cell phone at the same time as tracking Meshayla's flight progress on the computer. From boarding, to take off, to progress in the air.
Meshayla called me as soon as they landed in Newark, and I talked to her as she went from her arrival gate, to her departure gate, both of us looking at the maps of the terminal that we printed off the computer. She hung up after telling me she was on the plane, and Laura called to tell me that the plane had taken off. She sent me updates via facebook telling me of her progress as long as it was available, & then called to tell me that the plane had landed, and Meshayla was safely on the "otherside" and by her side.
We worked it in reverse on her flight back home 3 months later. Pretty much kept the whole "traveling on her own" thing bearable. (And yes Lynisha and Relyssa, I know...I STILL had some moments...)
Anyway....a little side tracked with where this post was suppose to be going....
It's MINE....For the very first time, I have a passport. Travel in my life has been very limited & I've never had a reason to get one before.
After much talking, persuading & figuring out plans, *I* am going to visit Laura! Leon can't go as he dosen't have time off from his job available.
I applied for and got my passport in record time, still didn't know for sure who was going to go with me, I was NOT wanting to go by myself, and I was thrilled when my friend Ruthie said how much she'd like to visit over there, and I said "Would you like to go with me"? and she said "YES"!
(Raimie w/baby P. Gay,-- me, and Lynisha with our friend Ruthie. We spent the night and had Sunday morning and noon with her on our way home from our trip to Longaberger country Ohio.)
I leave the middle of Sept, and will be gone for 3 weeks.
Now I have my work cut out for me. Arrangements for kids. Laundry done up. Bills paid. I have a convention to get ready for first, and then last but not least......
The all consuming question of WHAT CLOTHES DO I TAKE?

Just don't take too many clothes, they are a pain to carry around.
ReplyDeleteIn the picture of Laura's co-workers, I recognize a couple faces. Sharron C left our field to go to Neb, oh so many yrs ago. Sherry C is from Mn. Her little bro meets with us on Sun AM. I hope you have a good time on your trip. 'Overseas' is still a long ways. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, Maxine, WE REALLY ARE GOING - in just a little over a month! It's so exciting, overwhelming, exciting, I-can't-believe-it, exciting....! Can you tell I'm excited about getting to go see Laura with you? And when you get it all figured out -- what to pack and how to get everything done between now and departure -- clue me in!
ReplyDeleteand in between all that stuff we ARE going to work out some time to figure out these new cameras so you can record your trip in finest detail!!!!
ReplyDeleteYay!! How exciting! With overseas travel, I've learned the less you take with you, the better. We try to have only 1 bag and 1 carry on. It isn't easy tho! :P
ReplyDeleteSounds like a wonderful reason to get a passport - enjoy!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis post made me cry all over again! I can't believe I didn't drive across the state to see her off... and now I can't even remember why?!
ReplyDeleteI'm SO glad you are going and found someone to go with you!!!
Whoa deja vu....I mean boo hoo hoo. I forgot what a tear jerker that one really became.
ReplyDeleteNish I think you didn't drive across the country to see me off cause I had just spent several wks at your house. But anyway when I come back you can come meet me then okay!
As far as clothes like I said before pack your suitcase and then take half of it out and that should be about right.
I can't wait to see you:*)

P.S. Isn't that a Alice in WOnderland or through the looking glass quote (about the walrus)... seems like it part of a poem in a Lewis Carroll book.
i was just going to say the exact same thing as Alleykat...so , yeah..don't worry about taking more than a couple of outfits that interchange etc.
ReplyDeleteand HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!
I am so excited for you! And I know that we will all enjoy the pictures you will take along the way!!
ReplyDeleteOwning a passport is exciting, just to know you can. So happy for you that it's going to be a reality!
ReplyDeleteI echo what alleykat says, too....I have an aunt who did the same kind of work in as your daughter, only in Norway...my 2 sisters and I visited her...2 wks...one carry on suitcase did it...outfits can interchange...enjoy your time
ReplyDeleteThis post made me teary eyed. Goodbyes are hard, but I'm so happy that you get to go visit your daughter. And no one better to go with than my Auntie Ruth.
ReplyDeletedear Looking ahead,
ReplyDeleteI have been meaning to get back here since the first day.
Yes, it comes from "The Walrus and The Carpenter" by Lewis Carroll. (It is part of 'Through the Looking~Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872)
It is quite a long poem, and is typically nonsensical in true Lewis Carroll form, but kind of fun anyway. Here are a couple of excerpts. The first one is the beginning, the other is the 11th verse.
The sun was shining on the sea,
Shining with all his might:
He did his very best to make
The billows smooth and bright--
And this was odd, because it was
The middle of the night.
"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."

Good Morning J's,
ReplyDeleteI mostly want to say Hi... it has been a while since I have some to see your blog. Fun to see these updates. And of course it is always so fun to see pictures of you all.
Especially glad to see the days when Laura was leaving... What a delight to see her so happy in her place.
I'm running waaay behind on my blog reading. I must say the picture of Laura leaving made me cry too! Hope that the good-bye on the 6th isn't this difficult!
