I believe I mentioned in my last post that I tend to be impatient. I really wanted chickens last year. Since we moved here last March, in the middle of cold, rainy weather, and had tons of things to do just to get settled along with the chicken house needing repair and all the prep work it involved it simply was not reasonable to jump into the chicken venture.
All year long it's been
HAHAHA--Read, *my goal to have my husband have everything done*.
Well...spring is here, the chickens are in,
and
No, not quite!
Another bout of
Oh well...who needs a chicken house for baby chicks anyway?
Turning back the pages on my memory book I remember my mom raising chickens all the years I was growing up before I turned a teenager and we moved to K-town.
We lived in a very
One of the places we lived was in the back of a grocery store/combo-feed store. In part of the back area there were empty rooms that doubled quite well as a place to put chickens.
(What? You don't put your chickens in the house with you?)
Another place we lived had an old adbanded house next to ours. The house and fenced in yard worked as a perfect place for mom to keep/raise her chickens.
(What?? You don't do that either?)
Well, we are talking 40 years ago, and did I mention the town was TINY--you almost could consider it a non-town!
WAIT A MINUTE--40 YEARS AGO??? Where did the time go?
So today I was on my way home from accross the state, and my husband calls. It went kind of like this:
Him: "I bought the chickens today, you will need to stop in town and pick them up on your way thru."
Me: "Uh, why didn't you take them home, you have the pickup"?
Him: "It's chilly, and they need to stay warm, just put them in the backseat."
Ohh, Kay. Yes I guess I did want to raise chickens, I suppose that means I have to do more than tell the kids to gather the eggs, or fry them up after they're butchered, right?
So. Husband forgot he had to work this afternoon, spent all morning in town, rushed home with the supplies, instead of being able to put the chickens in the chicken house we had to fix a place in the basement for them. Do this, do that, like this, like that....he hollers as he runs out the door, leaving the poor chicks to our un-educated mercy.
These two have stated that they are the official "chicken keepers". I hope they know what they're doing, because I sure don't!
Now before you get all worried that we really don't know what we're doing, let me state that this is a very short stop-gate measure, and we had to go bring in my other large tub to additionally accommodate them.
I just checked on them. food, check. Water, check. Heat, check. Bedding, check. Not too crowded, check.
I'll probably have to check on these two girls tonight--they'll probably want to go downstairs to sleep so they can keep them company.
Thanks in advance for all the prayers for my sanity & patience in this fowl adventure.
P.S. Maybe you could pray for the chicks survival too, since we're such novices? (at least until butchering time)
It looks like you're doing GREAT!!! :) You've got all your bases covered. Before you know it, raising chicks will be easy peasy. :) What kind did you end up getting?
ReplyDeleteIf there is anything cuter than baby chicks, I don't know what it is, (animal wise). I wish Lynette could have chicks, but we don't have a place, won't keep them in the basement, and I'm not as willing as your are!! We'll have to come out and see them.
ReplyDeleteJanelle--Leon forgot the paper when he went into town & so ended up getting the cheaper basic ones to start with. Not so terribly many--and the fryers. We hope to get layers soon too. At this point it was a "just jump in and do it--try it out!!
ReplyDeleteShelley--Remember--my basement is unfinished. Cement walls & floor. No problem for chicks! We actually could block the door & turn them loose in the room when they get a bit bigger if we have to.
smile! Great writing! so similar to here... and now that ours are testing their flying ability I had to put a sheet over the box. I changed them every other day so we don't smell them. On the chicken house (coop) note well its in the works. We have to start from scratch. By this time next year will you have your own lil beef steers?
ReplyDeleteGood Work GIRLS!
You gonna dye one for easter?
ReplyDeleteAWWWW SO Cute!!...Don't forget to name them all now!! and Remember FLUFFY. Hehe,....hope you let the girls sleep down there....wouldn't have been able to keep me out ;)
ReplyDeleteOoh, very sweet indeed. Will be great fun for the kids too. I bet you can't wait for eggs.....
ReplyDeletewe've been wanting to get get chicks down here, but it's tricky since we go back and forth. lucky for us, gma usually gets baby chicks each spring. so we get fresh eats/chicken when we get back home!
ReplyDeleteMy Mom does this every year, so if you have any questions just ask her :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I loved reading about your new chicken venture. I remember doing that. We've sure known each other a long time, heh? :) Good luck!!!
ReplyDeleteSince you've been wanting them, I think it's neat you're going ahead with it even if conditions aren't ideal -- this will make it all the more memorable for the 'chicken-keepers'! (Can you believe my parents let my little bro keep a pig in our basement short-term due to necessity!! So baby chicks can't be too bad to have down there!)
ReplyDeleteThat really brought back memories of the my childhood on the farm. I remember chicks in the house and in the chicken house under the lamp. I also remembered butchering day, when I tried to make myself scarce. I always thought that if I actually had to kill my own meat I might become a vegan. All my animals became pets. ;)
ReplyDeletePLEASE don't let the girls name them! LOL! It's going to be hard enough when it comes time for butchering!
ReplyDeleteRemember when my kids had to bring the goat into that basement when it stormed? What a time?!
ReplyDeleteOkay falling in love with these little chicks, and then I read about butchering...can't tell I WASN'T raised on a farm, huh? Best of luck learning the ropes...look forward to learning right along side you.
ReplyDeleteSorry I have been such a bad blogging friend...missed a few post, but had to tell you LOVE your header...very pretty.
@Darcie- growing up on a farm doesn't help. I love eating eggs and chicken... but I don't like chickens (the live ones) and I don't like butchering them, either. Urg.
ReplyDeleteThis post made me laugh. How is everyone doing? :)
should be fun to follow this adventure! love farm fresh eggs!
