I have to say that generally I feel like I didn't get as much done as I had either
1. thought I would,
2. Wished I could,
3. Knew I should or
4. Knew I could have if I wouldn't have done "other" things.
Most of our married life I've been a SAHM. Before we had kids (which was only a year after we were married) I babysat. During alot of years I babysat/did daycare. I also had a machine quilting business for quite a few years.
We homeschooled our kids for 14 years.
for 1 1/2 yr I also owned/worked at a tea room, and then worked for 8 years with my sister at our scrapbook store.
I garden. I preserve food. I bake. I cook 2 meals a day. I chauffeur kids home from school a couple days a week. I keep house. I do laundry. I do all the things that go along with having a husband, 6 kids at home, & Sunday a.m. gathering here in our home.
What do I do for "fun"?
Occasionally I get to scrapbook. I take long bubble baths nearly every night. (It's my sanity break, my relaxation.)I read some--not as much as I used to when I was sitting nursing babies.
I'm trying to get into sewing again--which I should be doing instead of this. OH YES, and I blog!
I'm also involved in one organization (Nebraska Friends of Midwives) that I do some volunteer work occasionally (like yesterday and today making 28 doz cookies.)
Yes, when you read all that it may sound like alot. But, I don't do ALL that EVERY day!
My house is not spotless, My laundry is not always done. But considering the fact that my kids are gone for 8 hrs. during the day, What SHOULD I be doing?
Here's what I did yesterday:
- I made 16 doz cookies
- Did several loads of laundry
- washed dishes
- picked up kids from school
- talked to my mom on the phone
- talked to my sister 2x on the phone
- Visited with my mom at her house
- washed my hair
- watched the inauguration
- Baked 6 loaves of bread
- Washed dishes
- Did several loads of laundry
- Picked up kids from school
- talked to my sister on the phone
- Did some sewing
- Blogged
- Made 12 doz more cookies
- Talked to 3 of my daughters on the phone
- Talked to a survey taker --invited her in while I was frantically baking cookies)
- supervised kids homework
- supervised Meshayla making supper
- went to Bible study
Hmmmm.........I don't know, except when I had more kids at home, & home all day, I did a whole lot more. Just different.
What do you do all day?
Don't forget talking to your DAUGHTERS on the phone!
ReplyDeleteLol well lets see. Today I celebrated so not much but on a regular Tues/Wed my day would be like this.
ReplyDeleteGet up at 4:30 so I have time to get ready for the day and include the all important breakfast.
Be at the hospital at 5:45 for report. Take care of how many ever patients asigned to me for the day until 4pm sit in class for an hour and a half more and try to stay awake. Go home and see my husband briefly. Then if Tues night do at least 2 hours of prep for the next day of clinicals plus a load of laundry or so as even just the two of us seem to make more laundry than a laundry Sat can handle. If it is Wed then I go to bible study then come home and finish my reports for Thur plus read the chapters for then next days classes because if I don't read them at least twice I forget them. Thats prety much my Tues/Wed right now.
I think you've always been busy Mom just more organized now.
@Nish...That's there, you missed it in the middle of all the other stuff!
ReplyDeleteSometime at the end of the day I wonder what I did all day. But I've never baked 16 doz. cookies in one day. Or 6 loaves of bread. Two meals, yes. Even 3! LOL
ReplyDeleteumm, you sure do get more done than I usually do! but let's see - yesterday I had 2 sick kids, which means I didn't do a whole lot. i did get to take books back to the library becuz Russ was home; did laundry. Russ did lunch, then did a tech job in the afternoon - and I took a nap! Got 2 scrapbook pages done, fed kids supper - stayed home from mtg with 2 kids. My thing tho is I feel like most days I spend WAY too much time doing things on the computer, and not enough other things I really OUGHT to get done!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way, not working outside the home. Wonder what in the living world have I done all day?
ReplyDeleteHummm...thinking...actually thinking about what a person does all day is almost like actually thinking about what you eat. It helps to write it down! Like you, when I had children at home my life was filled with taking care of husband, family and home, but now life has changed for me. I have more time to do other things. I still keep the most important things first (and have more time to spend on that part of my life) and everything else falls into place. : ) Your days aren't that much different than other wives/mothers...except you have more children! You manage it all beautifully. I'm impressed.
ReplyDeleteYes, you are amazing with the 16 doz. cookies and 6 loaves of bread...wow! Let's see...today will be slower than yesterday for you see I had 2 hrs. of dental work done this a.m.-yuck! So nursing a sore mouth today, but I'm sure once it's feeling better a load or 2 of laundry will be done and folded/put away. Yesterday I:
ReplyDelete-Took the kids to school
-Did an hour of cardio kickboxing at the gym
-Went back to the school to pick up teaching materials as I'm going to teach 3 classes in the Spring
-Went to the Hobby store to pick up last minute Pinewood Derby car stuff for Cub Scouts
-Stopped by Starbucks for a coffee (hey, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do!-LOL)
-Went to the Sporting Goods store and bought some new insoles for more support when working out; also bought a new water bottle that holds 24 oz.(yeah!)
-Helped the boys with their homework
-Went to mtg.
-Unloaded the dishwasher
So, although sometimes it doesn't sound like much, it does when you write it all down. So much for a SAHM. I think we live in the car about 90% of the time.
I commented.... ??
ReplyDeleteI thought it was so funny that you invited the survey taker in. I wonder what she thought? Maybe you should have asked her to help while she was asking you questions. ;)
Oh, my.......... You are amazing Maxine!
ReplyDelete*I made breakfast to order for Jay and the two oldest boys. - the rest got their own breakfast, as they prefer cold cereal or instant oatmeal.
*Took the next boy in line too school! (stopped for Breakfast at Starbucks, shhhhh!)
*Went to two banks to get a cashier's check (1st wanted to charge me for it and yes we have several large accounts there!)
*While at the first bank checked on some business we have in progress.
*Came home scanned in the check and Sales addendum and e-mailed back to Realtor.
*Packaged something we sold on Craigslist to send to mom and dad so they person can pick it up from them - in AZ!
*Went to the post office and mailed packages.
*Made the youngest, who was home sick, mac and cheese for lunch - his very favorite!
*Followed up on some houses for Jay.
*Talked to my folks.
*Talked to the realtor -- watch my blog for some interesting stories on these in a couple of months!
*Read over preliminary closing docs.
*Took a bunch of phone calls on craigslist items.
*Called a potential tenant back.
*Posted an empty on craigslist.
*Showed a craigslist item (Bike) to someone!
*Went to Safeway to pick up RX item and yellow summer squash.
*Back to PO to pick up mail.
*Made a deep fried supper - halibut and shrimp!
*Went to Bible Study
*We've enjoyed our special guest all week - a young sister worker.
*Helped a son with Algebra (I'm getting too outdated for this - things change! Our daughter usually does this but she was glued to the phone - our first experience with a beau!)
*Helped another son work on a scholarship app. - specifically wrote a letter of recommendation for his teacher to sign today!
*I did briefly take time to check a few blogs and a few minutes on FB - lateee last night!
LOL--Karen, Your list sounds way more complicated than mine!! See, it's really all in the perception of things! and Lanae, with your little ones, you are constantly busy too, just not the same things!
ReplyDelete@Dalayna--Yes, I answered the door--can I ask you a couple questions, sure, woopps, just a sec, got to set my timer, oh my, just come in here & ask me cuz I've got to get these cookies off this sheet, & more on the next one, she said "SURE!--and it smells delicious in here"...well, it should have, fresh baked bread plus cookies...! This was a very friendly lady, just a bit older than I, so we chatted while I worked & she programed in the answers on an electronic thingy (no more paper/pencils!) then the funny thing was that the gal I was doing the cookies for dropped by to give me the bags for them, and the two of them knew each other, (one went to school with the other's dad).... anyway, so they stood there & chatted....What a hoot!!!
I don't get nearly enough done. This computer is to blame, so I'm trying to cut back.
ReplyDeleteToday: I got Rebecca off to school, breakfast for the boys, dishes done, played farm animals and guns with the boys (they do TOO go together...) hid stuffed animals around the house for the boys to find while I picked up every room I went through and then vacuumed upstairs and down. Cleaned up all the bedrooms, made lunch (egg salad for Clayton and me, leftovers for Joel) and banana smoothies. Dressed the boys to go outside after I wiped pee off the toilet seat. And now here I am.
You do WAY more that I do...
good grief!! i'm exhasted just reading all this!!! BTW....I cant even remember WHAT I did yesterday......LOL
ReplyDeletebelieve me..you don't have to defend yourself after that list for goodness' sake. i feel 2 inches tall compared to what you accomplish in a day, girl! where do you get all your energy??
